Box Score The Webster University women’s basketball team started off the 2011-12 season with a hard-fought loss, 47-45, to Concordia University (IL) in the first round of the Cavallo Tip Off at Grant Gymnasium, on November 18. The Gorloks fell behind early, and were always within striking distance of the Cougars, but couldn’t seem to find a big basket when the opportunity presented itself.
The Gorloks tied the score for the first time in the contest, at 44-44, with 2:30 left in the game, on a Megan Willett (SR, Parkway West HS) lay-up off a Tyeila Gant (SR, Penn Valley CC) steal. The Gorloks seemed poised to take control of the game if they could grab a lead, but turnovers and missed shots down the stretch thwarted Webster at every opportunity. Willett led Webster with 10 rebounds, while picking up six points. Maggie Zehner (JR, Oakville HS) led the team in scoring with 10 points, including two for three from the 3-point line.
Concordia, a member of the Northern Athletics Conference, led 26-22 at the half as Webster shot a cool nine for 27 from the field, including three for 14 from the 3-point line. The Cougars were boosted in large part by six for eight shooting from behind the arc. Cassie Endicott, a 6’1 center from Civic Memorial HS (IL) had a memorable first half of college ball, blocking three shots in her first action.
Webster has a second round matchup in the Tip Off with Marian University (WI) at 3:00 p.m. on November 19. Rust College (MS) will take on Concordia in the first game of the day at 1:00 p.m. The Webster men jump into action later in the day as the Cavallo Classic opens play. Webster faces Bluffton University (OH) at 8:00 p.m.
