Box Score After an evening of glimpses that showed the Gorloks could make a game out of it, a final push came up short as the Webster University men's basketball lost to Austin College (TX), 68-64, on December 11, at Grant Gymnasium. Whittling with an ax, Webster reduced a 13-point deficit, with under three minutes remaining in the game, down to one with 12 seconds left. But one point down was the closest they would come.
Down, 60-47, with 2:59 left on the clock, a Gorlok 17-5 run was highlighted by three baskets by Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA), and three-pointers by Ahmed Smith (FR, Clayton HS), Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL), and Dietrick Sooter (JR, Pierce City HS, MO). The Gorloks had a chance to tie the game with two seconds remaining, but a turnover under the basket ended the opportunity.
While the two teams were fairly even in most categories statistically, one stat came back to haunt the Gorloks as they needed just a point or two at the end. Webster was 11-20 from the free throw line in the contest, and is shooting only 63% from the line as a team for the season.
Robinson led all scorers in the game with 21 points, and had six rebounds and three steals as well. Whittingham had 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had three blocked shots. Smith had a season high 15 points, coming off the bench.
Webster will have a three week layoff, with its next game coming on January 4 vs. Blackburn College (IL) at Grant Gymnasium, as the team gets back into action in the SLIAC. That will be the first of four straight home SLIAC games for the Gorloks to start the new year.
