Advancing to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship, the Webster University men’s basketball team downed Greenville College (IL), 78-61 on February 25 at Grant Gymnasium. A win in the tournament final vs. Westminster College on February 26, would send the Gorloks on their first trip to the NCAA III Championships since 2002.
Willie Trimble (JR, Riverside CC, CA) put on a first-half show, scoring 22 points while hitting five of five three-pointers, helping the Gorloks open a 32-12 lead to start the game. Webster hit seven of nine three-pointers to build a 48-24 halftime lead, allowing head coach Chris Bunch to utilize his bench heavily in the second half.
Trimble finished with a season-high 29 points, was five for six from the three-point line, and had five steals. Cody Bradfisch (SO, Jerseyville HS, IL) scored 15 points, hitting three of five from beyond the arc. As a team, Webster was 10 for 17 for three-point shooting.
Webster improved to 19-6 on the season. The 19 wins represents the second highest season total in team history. Webster can match its all-time high of 20 wins, reached in 2007-08, with a win in the final.
In the other first round action, Westminster defeated MacMurray College (IL), 73-63. The Gorloks split with Westminster during the regular season. Webster won at home, 57-48, on January 19, but lost in Fulton on February 16, 71-62. The championship game will start at 7:00 p.m. at Grant Gymnasium.
Webster University students are admitted free with a Webster ID. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for non-Webster students with a school ID and children ages 5-16. There is no charge for children under 5 years of age.
