Women's Tennis Opens Defense of SLIAC Crown With Win

The Webster University women's tennis team travelled to Carlinville, IL, and picked up a 7-2 win over Blackburn College on March 31.  The win was the team's fourth straight and first against a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent in 2011.

Allison Tungate (JR, Flora HS, IL) and Kate Coen (JR, Rockwood Summit HS) both extended their match winning streaks to eight with victories in singles and doubles, and both are 8-2 this year.  Lindsey Hays (SO, Francis Howell HS) won her seventh straight match, improving to 7-3 on the season, and Hannah Wojahn (SR, Cannon Falls HS, MN) improved to 5-2 with her two wins.

Maria Arias (SO, Lincoln HS, Costa Rica) made her Webste tennis debut, and won a hard fought singles match.  Arias prevailed, after losing the first set 5-7, by winning the second set 7-6 (8-6 in the tie-breaker) and finishing off the victory with a 7-5 win in the third.

The Gorloks won their first SLIAC title in 2010 as they advanced to the NCAA III tournament.  Webster started a stretch of four matches in four days.  The team travels to Fontbonne University on April 1 and has a day off before facing Westminster College and Eureka College (IL) on April 3 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
