The Webster University men’s basketball team stayed perfect in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an electrifying win over Greenville College, 87-86, in Greenville, IL, on January 18. A layup by Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL) with: 05 on the clock gave Webster the victory. The Gorloks are now 7-0 in the league, with a firm hold on first place.
Both teams slugged it out for the duration of the contest. After being tied 45-45 at the half, the Panthers opened up an eight-point advantage the Gorloks eventually overcame to take a one-point lead. But the lead was short-lived and the Gorloks found themselves playing catch-up the remainder of the half. With 47 seconds left in the game, and Greenville with the ball, Webster still trailed by one.
The Panthers worked the clock trying to extend the lead but turned the ball over with :17 left on the clock. After a Gorlok time out, Whittingham drove the left side of the lane for a layup, missed, but grabbed his own rebound for the put back. A last second Greenville attempt bounced straight up off the rim but came down off the mark as time expired.
Whittingham recorded his fifth double-double on the season, scoring 18 points and snatching 10 rebounds. Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA) led all scorers with 19 points, and blocked two shots. Cody Bradfisch (JR, Jerseyville HS, IL) had 18 points and six rebounds, and Dietrick Sooter (JR, Pierce City HS, MO) had 10 points and a game-high six assists.
The win was the team’s sixth straight and moved Webster to 7-8 overall on the season. The game was the start of a five-game road stretch for the men. The Gorloks travel to Fontbonne University on January 21, then to Lindenwood University for a non-conference game on January 23, before heading to Blackburn College on January 28 to resume SLIAC play.
