Gorloks Dis-lodge Beavers, 74-57

Webster Knocks Blackburn Out of Tie for SLIAC Top Spot

Box Score Improving to 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men’s basketball team defeated Blackburn College (IL), 74-57, on January 4, at Grant Gymnasium.   A Gorlok trio led a well-balanced Webster attack to turn back the pesky Beavers.

Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA) had 15 points to lead Webster, and pulled down eight rebounds.  Fellow transfer Dietrick Sooter (JR, Pierce City HS, MO) chipped in with 13 points and a team season-high eight assists.  Ahmed Smith (FR, Clayton HS) pumped in 14, going 6-10 from the field, including two of three from the three-point line.

Rounding out the Gorlok attack was Cody Bradfisch (JR, Jerseyville HS, IL) and Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL).  Bradfisch had nine points and six rebounds while Whittingham had nine points as well.  Sophomore Jarrod Huskey (Hillsboro HS, MO) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds

The Gorloks held a three-point halftime advantage, 36-33, but the Beavers gnawed at the lead, never trailing by more than six till 8:00 remained in the contest.  Leading 48-45, Webster went on a 13-0 run to split the game wide open as the margin jumped to 61-45.  A pair of Beaver timeouts in the span did little to help Blackburn dam up the Webster offensive works.

Webster is 2-8 overall and will be back at home on January 7, as they take on Spalding University.  The Gorloks travel to Eureka College on January 10 to face the Red Devils.
