Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team defeated Asbury College (KY), 93-91 on a basket by Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO), in overtime, at the Blue & Gold Classic in Louisville, on November 24.
The Gorloks had taken a four-point lead in overtime, at the 2:40 mark, and still led by four at 1:21. A three-pointer by Asbury with 14 seconds left in the OT knotted the game at 91-91. With 2.3 seconds on the clock, Smith hit a jumper to win it for Webster, as Asbury couldn't get another shot off.
Smith had a career high 24 points for the contest and was named to the Blue & Gold Classic All-Tournament Team. Aaron Griffin (SO, Rust College, MS) had 15 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for the Gorloks. Hollis Edwards (JR, McGavock HS, TN) and Roman Robinson (SR, Merritt CC, CA) both had 14 points for Webster.
The Gorloks took control of the game in the first half, shooting 63% (15-24) from the field and 84% (5-6) from the three-point line, and holding a 19-11 edge on the boards. All of that added up to a 41-34 halftime lead. But the Eagles soared in the second half, making 9-13 from beyond the arc, and had a 79-77 lead with 53 seconds remaining. Smith hit a big basket in regulation also, tying the game with 41 seconds left. After an Eagle missed layup with 14 seconds on the clock, Smith got off a shot at the buzzer that was off the mark.
Into overtime the teams went, and Smith's bucket assured the Gorloks of their second win of the young season Webster is 2-2 overall.
The Gorloks had a happy bus ride home celebrating the OT win, after a tough 82-78 loss to Cincinnati Christian University in the first round of the Classic. Webster returns home on November 28, to start St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, as they face Blackburn College (IL) at Grant Gym. The Gorloks travel to Greenville College (IL) on December 1, in another SLIAC matchup.
