Box Score Opening up the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a win, the Webster University men's basketball team defeated Blackburn College (IL), 87-54, on November 28, at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks, the defending champs in the SLIAC, marched to a 41-33 halftime lead and never looked back as they start 1-0 in conference play.
Webster quickly upped the lead to 51-33, with a 10-0 run to start the second half, highlighted by a thunderous dunk by Aaron Griffin (SO, Rust College, MS). After Blackburn snapped the streak, Roman Robinson (SR, Merritt CC, CA) answered with a steal, followed by a slam of his own. Two Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) steals and breakaway baskets later, Webster had a 20-point lead, 59-39.
The Gorloks had a workmanlike effort in the contest, outshooting the Beavers 47%-35%, grabbing 45 rebounds, and only committing 12 turnovers. All 15 players saw action and 12 players got in the scoring column, with four players winding up in double figures for the Gorloks. Smith broke the 20-point barrier for a second straight game, scoring 20 on 9-12 shooting from the field.
Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO) came off the bench to score 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Robinson had 12 points and Cody Bradfisch (SR, Jerseyville HS, IL) chipped in with 11.
Webster is 3-2 on the season. The Gorloks continue play in the SLIAC with a contest at Greenville College (IL) on December 1. The team is home on December 5 to host Washington University at Grant.
