Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team lost to the #5 ranked Washington University Bears, 77-57, on December 29, at Grant Gymnasium. Despite being outsized and outmanned, the Gorloks scrapped and fought before succumbing to a Bear roster that sported seven six-footers...seven more than Webster.
The Gorloks came into the contest with a roster of just 10 healthy players and were facing a Bear front line whose height averaged over 6'0 per woman. Webster countered with a forward line that averaged just over 5'8 and the differential gave the Gorloks fits under the basket.
Webster hung with Washington U. early in the contest, trailing 15-14 at the 10:00 mark in the first half, but were slowly worn down and trailed, 45-28, at the break. Webster was outrebounded, 28-14 in the half, including 14-4 on the offensive boards. In the second, a pair of Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) three-pointers to start the half pulled Webster within 11, 45-34, but the Gorloks could get no closer.
Williams, who was blanked in the scoring column in the first half, had 12 points in the second, including three three-pointers. Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO) led Webster with 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) had eight rebounds to lead the Gorloks, and finished with seven points and a team-high four assists.
Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had nine points and seven rebound. Freshman Kaitlin Kendall (O'Fallon HS, IL) came off the bench to score eight points in the first half, including 2-3 from the three-point line.
Webster is 4-6 on the season. The Gorloks will host Southwestern University (TX) on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, at 1:00 p.m. at Grant Gymnasium. Webster will jump back into action in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on January 5 when they travel to Eureka College (IL).
