First Blemish as Webster Men Fall at Westminster

Box Score Hitting a stumbling block on its quest for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the Webster University men’s basketball team lost at Westminster College, 65-58, in Fulton, MO, on February 1.  The loss snapped a Webster nine-game win streak in the SLIAC.  The Blue Jays were the SLIAC pre-season favorite to win the league, but the Gorloks’streak still leaves them holding a comfortable two-game lead in first place.

In a contest where they outrebounded their opponent by 10, shot an almost identical percentage from the field, and made more free throws, the Gorloks never seemed to get untracked in the game.  Webster led by one at the half, 25-24, but  couldn't distance themselves from Westminster.  After a couple of untimely Gorlok misses, combined with several Blue Jay baskets, in the game’s waning minutes, Webster found itself on the losing end of the final score.

Stefan Whittingham (Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL) had another outstanding game to add to his sophomore campaign, hitting his sixth double double on the season.  Whittingham had 19 points and a Webster season-high 15 rebounds for the game.

Hollis Edwards (McGavock HS, TN), another Gorlok having a fine sophomore season, had 14 points, including four three-pointers, and a team-high three steals.  Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA) had 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Gorloks are 9-1 in the SLIAC and 9-10 overall.  Webster is home on February 4 to play Eureka College (IL) on Hall of Fame Day at Grant Gymnasium.  Three new members of the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducted at halftime of the men’s game.  The team travels to Principia College (IL) on February 7 to take on the Blue and Gold.
