Webster Women Declaw Panthers, 69-61

Box Score Clinching a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament, the Webster University women’s basketball team defeated Greenville College (IL), 69-61, on February 15, at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks were sparked in a first half comeback by Loren Douglass (SR, Marquette HS) and Jaime Gaal (JR, Ursuline Academy), coming off the bench. 

Webster followed up its worst shooting of the season, in the second  half (17%) at Spalding University last Saturday, with its best in the first  half against Greenville, hitting 54% on 13-24 shooting.  Down 16-6, the Gorloks went on a 31-11 run to pull to a 37-29 halftime lead.  Douglass scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds, and Gaal scored nine points, in the stretch.  Gaal was three for three in the run, including two for two from the three-point line.

The Panthers clawed back to tie the game at 52-52 with 6:00 remaining in the game, and trailed 60-59 with 2:40 left, but the Gorloks outscored Greenville 9-2 in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

Gaal finished the contest as Webster’s leading scorer with 13.  Douglass and Cassie Endicott (FR, Civic Memorial HS, IL) wound up with 12 points each.  Maggie Zehner (JR, Oakville HS) led Webster with four assists and five steals, and hit double figures in points also, with 11.

Webster is 8-6 in the SLIAC and 10-13 overall.  The Gorloks travel to MacMurray College (IL) on February 18 and wind up the regular season at home with The Battle of Big Bend vs. Fontbonne University on February 21.
