Box Score A thrilling double overtime win, 88-81, at MacMurray College (IL), on February 18, vaulted the Webster University men’s basketball team into first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The win breaks a tie with Eureka College (IL), who lost later that evening at Westminster College. The Gorloks earned the right to host the SLIAC post-season tournament with the win. Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL) had a career-high 31 points in the victory.
The Gorloks and Highlanders ended regulation tied at 65-all and the first OT ended with the teams tied at 79-79. Webster pulled to a four-point lead with 3:00 remaining in the 2
nd OT and pulled away in the final minute to secure the victory.
The 31 points by Whittingham was the most by a Gorlok since Nick Jones scored 37 vs. Greenville College on January 20, 2010. He was 12-20 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds. Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA) had 18 points and led Webster with eight rebounds. Cody Bradfisch (JR, Jerseyville HS, IL) and Hollis Edwards (SO, McGavock HS, TN) also reached double figure in points with 13 and 11.
Webster was a perfect six for six from the three-point line, including four for four in the second half. After three straight games of poor shooting from the free throw line, the Gorloks got hot at the right time, hitting 18-23 (78%) against MacMurray.
Webster is 12-3 in the SLIAC and back at .500 overall at 12-12. The Gorloks host the Battle of Big Bend II vs. Fontbonne on February 21 at Grant Gymnasium. A Webster win would assure the team of an outright SLIAC 2011-12 regular season title. By virtue of conference tie-breakers, the Gorloks will host the the SLIAC tournament whether they win or lose the conference finale vs. Fontbonne. The first round will be played on February 23 at Grant Gymnasium, with Webster playing at 8:00 p.m. vs. an opponent TBD. The championship game will take place on February 25 at 1:00 p.m.
