Box Score Fighting to hold on to first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Webster University men’s basketball team dropped its second straight SLIAC contest, 83-80, in overtime to Eureka College (IL), on February 4 at Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks survived a stunning finish to regulation, only to succumb in overtime, as they fall to 9-2 in the league.
A Cody Bradfisch (JR, Jerseyville HS, IL) three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in regulation saved the game temporarily by sending it into overtime. Unbelievably, after the Bradfisch make to tie it, a court-long inbounds pass by Eureka skipped off a Gorlok defender’s hands right into a Red Devil’s, who missed an open layup as time expired.
Webster wasn’t so lucky in the overtime as some rough play, and poor shot selection, suddenly left the Gorloks in a tight race for the SLIAC crown. The Red Devils, who are 10-3 in the SLIAC, came into the game in second place and crept within one loss of the Gorloks. MacMurray has three losses as well, but only eight wins.
Stefan Whittingham (SO, Ft. Lauderdale HS, FL) had a team-high 18 points and shared the team-high rebounds with Bradfisch at seven each. Bradfisch finished with 15 points and Jarrod Huskey, who was six for six from the field, had 14 points on the night. Roman Robinson (JR, Merritt CC, CA) dropped in 10 points for Webster and handed out a team-high six assists.
The Webster Athletics Hall of Fame added three new members at halftime of the contest as Jeanne Zes Gilbert, Laura Stuhlman Peiter, and Ashley Everett Zeier were inducted. Webster President Dr. Elizabeth Stroble was on hand to help officially welcome the threesome into the Webster Athletics Hall.
The Gorloks are 9-11 overall. The Gorloks travel to Principia College (IL) on February 7 and to Spalding University (KY) on February 11, before returning home to face Greenville College (IL) on February 15.
