Eureka Overpowers Webster, 81-65

Box Score Facing a bigger and stronger Eureka College (IL) lineup, the Webster University women’s basketball team scrapped and battled, but eventually was overwhelmed by the Red Devils in an 81-65 loss.  Out-rebounded, 57-36, the Gorloks couldn’t overcome 22 Red Devil second chance points in the contest at Grant Gymnasium, on February 4.

Eureka features the two leading scorers and the leading rebounder in the SLIAC, and its roster has six players 5’11” or taller.  Coach Jordan Olufson tried to counter with a “big” starting lineup, and the Gorloks led 28-26 with 5:00 in the first half.  A Red Devil 18-5 run to close the first half, though, left Webster in a 44-33 halftime hole.

Maggie Zehner (JR, Oakville HS) once again led the Gorloks with 16 points.  She had five rebounds, three assists, and four steals before fouling out of the game.  Loren Douglass (SR, Marquette HS), making a start for just the second time this season, had nine points and a team high seven rebounds.  Kaliann Rikard (SO, Cuba HS, MO) had six assists to lead the Gorloks.

The St. Louis Falcons, a Special Olympics basketball club, played a halftime exhibition, delighting the Webster faithful in attendance.

Webster is 6-5 in the SLIAC and has an overall record of 8-12.  The Gorloks travel to Principia College (IL) on February 7 and to Spalding University (KY) on February 11, before returning home to face Greenville College (IL) on February 15.
