Webster Men Sneak By MacMurray, 64-63

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team won a barnburner, 64-63, at MacMurray College (IL), on January 23, and in the process threw itself smack in the hunt for a berth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament.  With the victory, the Gorloks move into a three-way tie for third place in the conference, at 6-3, with MacMurray and Westminster College.

But to win the ballgame, the Gorloks had to overcome a 12- point Highlander second half lead.  After trailing, 31-28, at the half, Webster fell into a 48-36 hole with 13:00 minutes left in the game.  Just as they had a week earlier in another come from behind win at Westminster, the Gorloks slowly ground down the lead.

A key point in the contest came with 7:00 left in the second.  After back to back Webster baskets pulled the Gorloks to within 55-51, center Jarrod Huskey (JR, Hillsboro HS, MO) picked up his fifth foul, leaving the team with only one player taller than 6'2 (Roman Robinson at 6'3).  Webster forged ahead with the smaller squad and after a steal and lay up by Hollis Edwards (JR, McGavock HS, TN) with 3:00 remaining, were tied at 62-62.

After a Highander turnover and Dietrick Sooter (SR, Pierce City HS, MO) lay up gave Webster a 64-63 lead with :50 on the clock, MacMurray stlll had ample time to win the game.  MacMurray called back to back timeouts, the second with 9.8 seconds to play, but the Highlanders turned the ball over before getting off a last shot, and Webster headed home with the victory.

Sooter led Webster with 16 points for the game.  Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) had 15 points and six rebounds on the night.  Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) had 12 points and team-highs with seven rebounds and six assists.  Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO) also wound up in double figures with 10 points.

Webster improves to 8-9 overall with its fourth straight win.  The Gorloks return home on January 26 to take on Eureka College (IL) at Grant Gym.  This is the start of five straight games at home for Webster.
