Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team fell to Eureka College (IL), 69-64, at Grant Gymnasium, on January 26.  Despite the Gorloks falling into a second place tie with the Red Devils in the SLIAC, there was a silver lining on the afternoon as senior guard Maggie Zehner (Oakville HS, MO) scored her 1000th career point in the loss.

Zehner entered the game with 981 career points and a three-pointer, with 1:10, left in the contest pushed her past the 1000 barrier to 1002.  In the process, she became just the sixth player into Webster history to score 1000 points and is now sixth on the all-time scoring list, surpassing Mikki McCune (1994-98) who had 986 points.

The Gorloks took an early lead, 11-6, to start the contest, but a 24-5 run by the Red Devils put Webster in a 30-16 hole with 5:20 left in the first half.  Webster skimmed seven off the lead to enter the locker room down by seven, 34-27, despite being outrebounded by Eureka, 31-12.  Eureka grabbed 13 offensive boards in the session, leading to the Red Devils holding a 16-4 advantage in second chance points for the half.  Zehner had 10 first half points, skipping her by McCune into 6th place.

Eureka maintained a 10 point lead for most of the second half until a Webster run closed the Gorloks to within four, 56-52 with 6:20 left in the second, and down by just two, 58-56, with 4:30 remaining.  After a Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) lay up at the 3:10 mark, Webster found itself tied with Eureka at 58-58.  But the Red Devils ground out a five-point lead, and though Zehner's three-pointer closed Webster to within two, 66-64, it would be the last points for the Gorloks. 

Zehner wound up leading Webster with 21 points for the day, and has scored 20 points or more in six of her last eight games.  Gwen Williams (SR, FT. Zumwalt West, MO) had 14 points, six rebounds, and a team high four steals in the game.  Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had 12 points and six rebounds, and Rikard had nine rebounds to lead Webster in that category.                                            

Webster is 7-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and 10-9 overall.  The loss ends the Gorloks five game winning streak.

The Gorloks still have four straight home games to go before having to leave the friendly confines of Grant Gymnasium.  Webster will host Westminster College on January 30 and Greenville College (IL) visits on February 2, Hall of Fame Day.
