Westminster Keeps Control in Defeat of Webster

Box Score Seeing its five game win streak snapped, the Webster University men's basketball team lost to Westminster College, 67-60, on January 26, at Grant Gymnasium.  The Blue Jays came into the contest with a sparkling 14-5 record overall and tied for second in the SLIAC with the Gorloks.  Webster couldn't replicate its feat of eleven days earlier when they toppled Westminster in Fulton, as the Blue Jays settled the season score.

The loss dropped Webster into a fourth place tie with MacMurray College (IL) at 7-4 in the SLIAC.  With three more straight SLIAC games at home, and four of its final five versus teams behind them in the standings, Webster still is in position to take home a SLIAC post-season tournament berth.  Despite committing a manageable 12 turnovers on the night, Webster found itself outscored 16-2 in points off turnovers, as Westminster only turned the ball over six times and the Gorloks had a season-low two steals in the contest.

Things were looking up for the Gorloks when Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) slammed home a thunderous dunk, his second of the half with six minutes remaining in the first, to give Webster a 26-16 lead.  That lead vaporized in a span of minutes as Westminster went on a 12-4 run to cut Webster's lead to 30-28.  After leading at the half, 34-31, the Gorloks quickly lost their advantage to an 8-0 Blue Jay run to start the second, and Webster played catch-up the rest of the way.

A Danny Zehner (SO, Oakville HS, MO) three-pointer and a Cody Bradfisch (SR, Jerseyville HS, IL) layup pulled Webster within three, at 63-60, with 1:00 remaining.  A Westminster turnover with :52 left gave the home fans even more hope, but Webster would score no more as the Blue Jays made their free throws in the final seconds to ice the contest.

Robinson had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Bradfisch finished with 13 points and five rebounds.  Zehner had 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds to tie Robinson for the team lead.  Jarrod Huskey (JR, Hillsboro HS, MO) had 12 points and seven rebounds for the game.

Webster is 9-10 overall on the season.  This marked the second of a five home-game stretch for the Gorloks.  Webster hosts Greenville College (IL) on February 2, Hall of Fame Day at Grant Gymnasium.  The Gorloks downed the Panthers their last meeting, 91-61, at Greenville on December 1.  Three new members of the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducted at halftime of the men's game that afternoon.
