Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team made a statement with a thrilling, 87-83, overtime win at Eureka College (IL), on January 5. The win at Eureka, who finished second in the SLIAC at 13-3 last year and were 21-5 overall, gave notice that the Gorloks can be a player in the race for the league crown.
In a contest that was a see-saw battle throughout, the Gorloks had several stand out performers. Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO) had 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists on the afternoon. Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) had 20 points as well, on 7-11 shooting. Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) had a team-high 10 rebounds, scored eight points, and had three steals. Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
Webster led 38-37 at the half, and the teams were tied at 73-73 at the end of regulation. The Gorloks piled up 11 steals to the Red Devils four, and won the turnover battle, giving the ball up 15 times to Eureka's 23. Webster was only 2-13 from the three-point line, but had 27 free throws for the game, including 10-14 in the overtime session. That was the difference in the final outcome as the Red Devils reached the charity stripe just four times in OT, making two.
The Gorloks are 2-1 in the SLIAC and 5-7 overall. Webster continues play in the SLIAC with a game at home on January 8 vs. MacMurray College (IL). The team hits the road again on January 10, travelling to Louisville, KY, to take on Spalding University.
