Box Score Mirroring the Webster University women's basketball game earlier in the evening, the men's basketball team built a comfortable lead at home vs. MacMurray College (IL), only to see it evaporate as it lost, 71-69, on January 8. The Gorloks had a 10-point halftime lead, but two Highlander scoring spurts in the second half spelled disaster as Webster fell to 2-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Webster led 40-30 at the half, as the team shot 49% and had only three turnovers in the first. Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA) had 11 points in the half. In the second, the Gorloks still led by 10 until the Highlanders went on a 7-0 run, in just over two minutes, to shave the lead to three with 10:48 remaining. Webster built the lead back up to eight, but another run by the Highlanders, 13-2 in two and a half minutes, gave them a 65-62 lead at the 3:49 mark.
From that point on, the Gorloks went two for eight from the field, and one for two from the free throw line before Robinson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. Meanwhile, the Highlanders hit six of seven free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) had another outstanding game, scoring 19 points, pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds, and pilfering a team-high four steals. Robinson finished with 19 points also, had eight rebounds, and four blocked shots on the night. Dietrick Sooter (SR, Pierce City HS, MO), returning to the lineup after missing two games, scored 13 points.
Webster is 4-8 overall on the season. The Gorloks will travel to Spalding University (KY) on January 10, and the road trip continues with a game at Westminster College, in Fulton, MO, on January 15.
