Highlanders Haul Down Gorloks, 71-64

Box Score After pulling to an early lead, the Webster University women's basketball team fell to MacMurray College (IL), 71-64, at home on January 8.  The Gorloks were buoyed by the three-pointer as they built an eight-point lead in the first half, but were tied halftime, and fell into a second-half hole they couldn't climb out of.

Webster grabbed a 10 point lead with 8:00 left in the first half, led by Maggie Zehner's (SR, Oakville HS, MO) four three-pointers...four of the six made by the Gorloks to that point.   A 7-0 run by the Highlanders pulled MacMurray within one, at 32-31, but a Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) three-pointer put the brakes on it.  The teams entered the locker room tied at 35-35, and Webster managed to hold a lead until just under 12 minutes in the second half.

A three-point play, two jumpers, and a three-point basket later, MacMurray had turned a two-point deficit into an eight-point, 55-47 lead, with 9:00 minutes remaining.  The Gorloks cut the lead to two, 64-62, with 1:37 left, but three missed three-point shots in the game's final minute by Webster killed any comeback.

With 21 points for the game, Zehner is averaging 20 points per game over the Gorloks' last three contests.  Zehner also had a team-high seven assists and pulled down four rebounds.  Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had 15 points and seven rebounds while Williams had a team-high eight rebounds, plus three assists, two blocked shots, and six points.

The Gorloks had beaten the Highlanders in 24 of their previous 25 meetings, and had not lost to MacMurray at home since 1998.  Webster falls to 2-2 in the SLIAC and is 5-8 overall on the season.  The Gorloks travel to Louisville, KY, to take on Spalding University on January 10, and have a date in Fulton, MO, on January 15 to face Westminster College.
