Men's Basketball Handed OT Loss at Eureka

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team dropped its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest with an 81-74 loss, in overtime, at Eureka College (IL) on December 14.  Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) led the Gorloks with 26 points.

Smith's 26 points were a Webster team-high for an individual in a game so far this season.  He was 11 for 21 from the field for the contest.  Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) had 11 points and six rebounds and Hollis Edwards (SR, Nashville, TN/McGavock HS) had team-highs with six assists and four steals.

Webster had a 10-point lead, seven minutes into the second half, but Eureka whittled it away and grabbed a 59-58 lead with just over six minutes remaining.  The Red Devils broke a tie with six seconds left in regulation to pull out in front, 69-67.  But a Smith jumper beat the buzzer with just one second remaining to send the game into the extra frame.

A Eureka three-pointer put them ahead at 2:47 in overtime, 75-72, and they were never headed over the final minutes.  Webster had a season-low six turnovers in the game and converted 16 points off Eureka turnovers.  Despite being out-rebounded 37-29, the Gorloks also led 32-20 in points in the paint.  But the Red Devils converted 22 free throws to the Gorloks' 11 and had 11 three-pointers to Webster's five.

The Gorloks are 2-1 in the SLIAC and 4-4 overall.  Webster is home on Friday, December 20 as it hosts Monmouth College (IL).  The Gorloks then take a two-week holiday break before resuming play in 2014, on January 4, at Washington University.
