Webster Women Waltz Past Panthers, 65-48

Box Score The Webster University women’s basketball team came back strong after a two-game skid, to defeat Greenville College, 65-48, at Grant Gymnasium on February 2.  The Gorloks took an early lead and were never seriously challenged the rest of the way as they improved to 8-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Webster took a commanding, 34-20, halftime lead.  Webster’s first three baskets of the half came via the three-pointer with the Gorloks hitting six for the half.  Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS, MO) was 3-4 beyond the arc for the half.   An 8-0 run early in the second half, to expand lead to 46-24, left little doubt as to the outcome and gave Coach Jordan Olufson a chance to give his bench some extra playing time.

Gwen Williams (SR, Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) led the Gorloks with 13 points and added five rebounds and three steals on the afternoon as well.  Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) just missed her first double double as she finished the game with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds and six assists.  Zehner finished with 12 points for the game and Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) hit double figures in scoring with 11 points.

The Gorloks had lost to the Panthers at Greenville in OT, 74-72, on December 1.  Webster is currently in third place in the SLIAC with the 8-4 record, pending the outcome of the Westminster College/Eureka College contest this afternoon.

With the win, Webster is 11-10 overall on the season.  The Gorloks still have two more games left on their five-game home streak, February 5 vs Principia College (IL) and on February 7 vs. Spalding University (KY).
