Webster Beats Fontbonne in OT Thriller, 84-80

Box Score The Webster University men’s basketball team kept its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive with an 84-80 OT win at Fontbonne University, on February 13.   The Gorloks improved to 9-5 in the SLIAC with the victory and remain in a fourth place tie with MacMurray.

Though the Gorloks ran to a 39-28 halftime lead, the Griffins gave them all they could handle in the second half.  After the Griffins took a five point lead with 2:46 remaining, the Gorloks needed some luck to get to the extra frame.  A Jarrod Huskey (JR, Hillsboro HS, MO) jumper and an Ahmad Smith (SO, Clayton HS, MO) layup cut the lead to 72-71 with 2:28 to go.

After a Fontbonne layup put the Griffins up 74-71 with 2:14 on the clock, a Smith three-pointer tied the game at 74-74.  That would be all the scoring until a controversial foul call on Roman Robinson (SR, Angelo Rodriguez HS, CA), away from the ball on a Griffin rebound on the Gorloks’ end, gave Fontbonne a chance to end it in regulation.  Fontbonne missed the front end of the one and one to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime, Fontbonne took an 80-77 lead with 1:34 to play but a basket and free throw by Cody Bradfisch (SR, Jerseyville HS, IL) tied the game at 1:08.  A Smith jumper with 35 seconds left gave Webster an 82-80 lead and two free throws by Smith with 14 seconds remaining iced it for Webster.

Robinson wound up with a team high 22 points, hitting 10 of 19 from the field, and six rebounds.  Huskey finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds before fouling out in overtime.  Huskey was 7-9 from the field.  Smith had 15 points, seven rebounds, and a team-high three assists.

An eye-popping 51 three-pointers were attempted by both teams with Fontbonne connecting on 11 and Webster five.  The Gorloks shot 49% from the field and outrebounded the Griffins, 41-34.  The win was Webster's 12th straight over Fontbonne.

The top four teams in standings gain an automatic berth in the SLIAC Tournament, the winner of which advances to the NCAA III Championships.  Webster is 12-11 overall on the season.

Webster travels to Carlinville, IL, to take on Blackburn College on February 16.  The Gorloks then close out their regular season schedule with a make-up game at home vs. Principia College (IL) on February 18 at Grant.
