Griffins End Gorlok Streak, 70-65

Box Score Seeing its three game winning streak snapped, the Webster University women’s basketball team fell at Fontbonne University, 70-65, on February 13.  Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had a double double and Maggie Zehner (SR, Oakville HS) inched up the Webster record books in the defeat.

The Gorloks took a one point lead late in the contest, after Pursley hit a pair of free throws to put Webster up, 62-61, with 1:30 left in the game.  But a Griffin three pointer on the ensuing possession put gave Fontbonne a lead they wouldn’t give up.   A Zehner layup with: 33 left drew Webster within one, 66-65, but Fontbonne hit their free throws in the waning seconds to seal the win.

Pursley had 18 points, on 6-10 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line, and 10 rebounds on the night.  Pursley led the Gorloks in both categories.   With 14 points for the game, Zehner now has 360 points on the year, the 10th highest single season total for Webster.

With the loss, Webster is 10-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Gorloks, who have a game in hand, still hold onto second place by a half game over third place Eureka College.  The Gorloks are 13-11 overall.

Webster plays its final regular season contest at Blackburn College on February 16.  The semi-finals in the SLIAC Tournament will begin on February 21, at host Westminster College.  The Gorloks have clinched either a 2 or 3 seed in the tournament and will play at 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 16 vs an opponent to be determined.
