Women Singe Spalding, 72-62, Go 10-4 in SLIAC

Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team stayed in the race for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a 72-62 win at home over Spalding University on February 7.  On Senior Night, as the Gorloks honored three players and their team manager for taking part in their final regular season game at Grant, Webster improved to 10-4 in the conference.

Webster raced to a 9-1 lead to start the game and kept a 10-point cushion for most of the first half until the Golden Eagles closed to within three, 39-36, at the break.  Webster shot 50% for the half (15-30) as two of the seniors honored, Gwen Williams (Ft. Zumwalt West HS, MO) and Maggie Zehner (Oakville HS, MO) led the Gorloks with 10 and eight points, respectively.  Webster had five blocks in the half, including four by Cassie Endicott (SO, Civic Memorial HS, IL).

The Gorloks pulled back out to a 10-point lead in the second half and maintained a comfortable margin throughout, with Spalding only coming as close as five points, 61-56, with 3:20 left in the game after a  layup and three-pointer for the Golden Eagles.  Webster then held on for the win.

Zehner wound up with 21 points on the night, shooting 7-13 from the floor, handing out five assists, and snatching five steals.  Williams had 16 points, and Courtney Pursley (JR, St. Clair HS, MO) had 15 points and added seven rebounds.  Kaliann Rikard (JR, Cuba HS, MO) had six assists and six rebounds for the game, while Lisa Adden (JR, Mt. Olive HS, IL) had a team-high eight rebounds coming off the bench.

In addition to Williams and Zehner, guard Airyn Miller (Belleville West HS, IL) and team manager Luree Furr (Los Angeles Baptist HS, CA) were honored as seniors.

Webster is 13-10 overall on the season.  This was the fifth straight home game for the Gorloks and Webster went 3-2 in that span.  The Gorloks finally hit the road as they resume the 'Battle of Big Bend' series with a game at Fontbonne University on February 13.
