The Webster University women's tennis team won first and second round matches in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, advancing to the championship match vs. Principia College (IL). The Gorloks defeated Fontbonne University, 5-0, in the opening round, and downed second round opponent Greenville College (IL), 6-3, on April 19.
The matches took place at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park, where the championship match with Principia will be held on April 20, at 11:00 a.m.
Webster was declared the winner against Fontbonne after winning the three doubles pairings and Lindsey Hays (SR, Francis Howell HS, MO) won her singles match at #1. Combined with Fontbonne defaulting the #6 singles, the Gorloks had the five points needed for victory.
Against Greenville, the Gorloks took a 2-1 lead in a very scrappy doubles.face off. Hays and Hillary Fitz (SO, St. Joseph's Academy, MO) won 8-4 at #1 but Kaylen Kress (FR, Bartlett HS, IL) and Kathleen Kennedy (SO, Providence Catholic, IL) lost a 6-8 battle at #2. Mackenzie Wilder (SO, Weatherford HS, TX) and Isabella Espinoza (SO, Temecula Valley HS, CA) won an equally tough battle at #3, 8-6.
Hays, Fitz, and Wilder all won at singles to put Webster up 5-3 and clinch the match. Kress wound up winning her singles match as well to make it a 6-3 final. Fitz and Kress had to come from behind after losing their first sets to win.
Webster is 14-1 on the season, with their only loss on the road at Principia on April 11.
