Box Score Webster University finished second out of six teams in the Rose-Hulman tournament after splitting a pair of matches Sunday (Sept. 8).
Â
The Gorloks (4-2) beat Muskingum (Ohio) in a sweep after being swept by the eventual tournament champion, Defiance (Ohio). Webster tied the host school with a 3-1 tournament record, but won the head-to-head match the previous day.
Â
Named to the five-player all-tournament team was junior hitter Sam Kersting (St. Louis, MO / Lindbergh). In the four tournament matches, Kersting tallied team highs of 32 kills and .307 hitting percentage. On defense, she had 22 blocks, second-best for Webster.
Â
Leading in blocks with 26 on the weekend was junior Emily Ratkewicz (Granite City, IL / Granite City). The back-row defensive leaders were juniors Megan Morrison (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) and Jordan Vehlewald (Wildwood, MO / Lafayette) with 48 and 40 digs, respectively.
Â
Junior setter Allie O'Toole (St. Louis, MO / Lutheran South) topped the team with 65 assists in the four matches.
Â
Webster recorded 24 blocks (calculated as 17 solos plus half of its 14 assisted) against Rose-Hulman shattering its school record for most blocks in a four-game match. Kersting had a team-high 11 blocks (seven solo, four assisted), followed by Ratkewicz with eight (five solo, three assisted). The previous team record was 18 against Illinois College on Sept. 12, 2006.
Â
The second-place finish for the Gorloks is a turnaround from last year when the absence of three key players contributed to an 0-4 mark in the same tournament.
Â
Webster's 4-2 start is its best since 2008, when it also started 4-2 on its way to a final record of 23-6.
