Webster Wings Westminster, 68-59

Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team handed Westminster College its first loss this season in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with a 68-59 win on January 9 at Grant Gymnasium.   The Gorloks took command early and despite a slight hiccup, held its grip on the lead.  Center Kevin Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) had 20 points in the win.

With the win, Webster is 3-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and in a tie with Westminster for second place behind undefeated Spalding University (4-0).  The Gorloks sprinted to a 20-6 lead with 11:00 left in the first half en route to a 34-26 halftime edge.  The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 38-36 four minutes into the second but would get no closer. The Gorloks settled down and ran off an 8-2 run to extend their advantage back to eight and held on for the victory.

Miller added a team-high nine rebounds and leads the team with a 7.9 per game average on the year.  Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS), who paces the Gorloks with a 15.4 scoring average, had 17 points on 7-10 shooting, and was 2-3 from the three-point line.  Senior center Jarrod Huskey (Hillsboro, MO/Hillsboro HS) came off the bench and had 11 points and seven rebounds in the winning effort.

The Gorloks improve to 6-5 overall on the season.  Webster will host the Blackburn Beavers on January 15 at Grant.  The Gorloks makes their first SLIAC visit to Mt. Pleasant, IA, to take on new member Iowa Wesleyan on January 18.
