Volleyball Title Hopes Fall in 3-1 Loss to Greenville

Box Score After coming out fired up in a 25-16 first set win, the Webster University volleyball team dropped the next three straight to lose to Greenville College, 3-1, on October 30, at Grant Gymnasium.  The loss ends the Gorloks hope of hosting the 2014 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

Webster jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the opening set and cruised to a 25-16 win.  In set two, the teams traded points, with no team holding a lead larger than two, and were tied at 10-10.  Webster reeled off four points to go out in front, 14-10, but Greenville scored five straight of its own to grab a15-14 lead.  Webster the next three points to regain the lead, 17-15, and led 21-18.  But Greenville continued to battle and finished with a 25-23 win.

The Gorloks came out flat in set three, falling behind 3-11.  They had chipped the Panthers lead down to four, trailing 18-22, but Greenville held on for a 25-21 win to take a 2-1 lead.  Webster took charge early in the fourth, taking a 7-3 lead and maintaining a 4-5 point advantage for most of the set, leading at 22-16.  But Greenville closed the set with a 9-1 run to win 25-23, and took the match, 3-1.

It was 'Pack The House Night' at Grant, and a large, boisterous crowd turned out to support the Gorloks battle vs. the Panthers.  Numerous students came dressed in costumes and vied for free pizzas between sets.  A canned food drive by the Athletic Department continues and its not too late to drop off a can or two on Friday at the Athletic Office.

Webster lost a tough match to Greenville earlier this season, 3-2, on September 20, in Jacksonville, IL.  Webster is 14-3 in the SLIAC and 19-12 overall.  The Gorloks fall into a second place tie with Westminster College, and close out the regular season with a match at Fontbonne University on November 4.  Greenville improves to 15-1 and holds the tie-breaker to host over Webster should they both finish the season at 15-3.  The loss ends a Gorlok 11-match win streak in the SLIAC.
