Box Score The Webster University men's basketball team lost in a bid to grab a piece of first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, losing at Spalding University, 81-73, on February 15 in Louisville, KY. The Golden Eagles improve to 14-1 while the Gorloks fall to 12-3 with the loss.
Kevin Miller and Ahmad Smith were the big scorers for the Gorloks, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Golden Eagles. Miller (SO, Belleville, IL/Belleville East HS) recorded a double double with a team-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. Both were season highs for Miller, who also had 13 rebounds at Elmhurst on November 26.
Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS) kept up his hot scoring pace of late, netting 21 points as he has averaged over 26 points for his last four games. Smith is averaging a team-high 16.9 points per game. Freshman guard Hunter Ward (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) also hit double figures in scoring, netting 13 for the game.
The Gorloks trailed 35-33 at the half and never could overtake the Golden Eagles in the second. Webster shot a respectable 45.6% (26-57) from the field, hit 19-23 (82.6%) free throws on the afternoon, and out rebounded Spalding 32-29. But the Golden Eagles knocked down 10-21 three-point attempts while the Gorloks could only can two of 10 tries.
The Gorloks are 12-3 in the SLIAC and 15-7 overall. The team travels to Westminster College on February 19 and are back home on February 22 as they host Eureka College (IL).
