Box Score Big road win for the Webster University women's basketball team as they downed Spalding University, 54-47, on February 15 in Louisville, KY. Spalding came into the game 12-2 and in second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. But the Gorloks overpowered the Golden Eagles as Webster improves to 11-4 with the win.
The game was a battle throughout as the Gorloks held a slim 23-21 halftime lead, and the teams stayed within several points of each other for the duration of the contest. With Webster up 47-45 with 4:00 remaining, center Cassie Endicott (Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) fouled out.
The Golden Eagles tied the game with a pair of free throws, 47-47, after the foul, but that would be the last points the Gorlok defense would allow. Webster led 49-47 with 1:10 remaining after a pair of free throws by forward Courtney Pursley, and a layup and free throw by guard Kaliann Rikard with :33 left all but sealed the deal for the Gorloks.
Shooting was a big part of the Gorlok win as Webster was 0-6 beyond the three-point arc but Spalding hit on only 1 of 18 long range attempts in the contest. The Gorloks were 22-33 from the free throw line as the Golden Eagles only hit 12 of 23 attempts.
Pursley (SR, Lonedell, MO/St. Clair HS) led Webster with 18 points and nine rebounds on the afternoon. Rikard (SR, Cuba, MO/Cuba HS) had another complete game effort with 13 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high five assists. Endicott wound up with 12 points for the game.
Webster is 14-8 overall on the season. The Gorloks travel to Fulton, MO, on February 19 to face Westminster College and are back home on February 22 as they host Eureka College (IL).
