Webster Men Hang on for Win, 78-72

Box Score Keeping its hope alive for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, the Webster University men's basketball team defeated Westminster College, 78-72, in Fulton, MO, on February 19.  The Gorloks improved to 13-3 in the conference, one game behind Spalding University (KY) and MacMurray College (IL), who are tied for first at 14-2.

The Gorloks took control in the first half and headed into the locker room with a 47-36 lead.   Webster extended its lead to 12 at 57-45 with 16:00 left in the second before Westminster began to chip away at the lead.  The Gorloks still led 72-65 with 1:45 remaining but a Blue Jay three-pointer closed the gap to 72-68 with 1:32 left.

After a pair of free throws by the Blue Jays with only 21 seconds remaining, Webster led, 74-72.  But a pair of free throws by Ahmad Smith (JR, St. Louis, MO/Clayton HS), put the Gorloks up 76-72 and Webster hung on for the win.

Freshman Hunter Ward (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood HS) had a double double with a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three assists.  Sophomore center Kevin Miller (Belleville, IL/Belleville East)  had 19 points and six rebounds, and Smith had 17 points and four rebounds for the night.

Webster shot a season high 60% from the field (30-50) and outrebounded the Blue Jays, 37-26, for the game.

The Gorloks are 16-7 overall.  The team hosts Eureka College (IL) on Senior Day, February 22, and travels to Fontbonne University to close out the SLIAC and regular season schedule on February 25.
