Box Score Led by the two seniors honored on 'Senior Day', the Webster University women's basketball team defeated Eureka College, 64-62, on February 22 at Grant Gymnasium. Senior Courtney Pursley (Lonedell, MO/St. Clair HS) had an outstanding 'Senior Day' performance, scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, while fellow senior Kaliann Rikard (Cuba, MO/Cuba HS) set the Webster record for assists in a single season.
For a second straight game, the Webster University women's basketball team took a comfortable halftime lead only to see it disappear, but this time the Gorloks hung on. Webster came out running, taking a 22-12 lead early and still leading by 10, 26-16, with 4:00 left in the first. After back to back three-pointers by Pursley, Webster led 34-21, and headed into the locker room up by 14, 38-24. Pursley finished the half with a double double at 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Kalian Rikard (Cuba, MO/Cuba HS), had eight points and four assists in the first half. The four assists gave her a season total of 111, breaking the single season record set by Toni Picerno in 2004.
Pursley and Rikard were both honored in a pre-game ceremony for their four years of play as Gorloks.
As was the case earlier in the week at Westminster, Webster saw its lead erode in the second half. A 9-1 Eureka run made it 42-37 and the teams continued to battle for the duration with Webster clinging to the lead. But an Ashley Brooks (SO, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) steal and assist on a Mia Williams (St. Louis, MO/Hazelwood West HS) layup, put the Gorloks up 62-56 with 2:50 remaining. Eureka pulled within two, at 64-62, with: 38 on the clock, but the Gorloks were able to run out the time for the win.
Purlsey's 16 rebounds tied her own team-high for the season, set against Augustana College on November 30, 2013. Rikard finished with 12 points, five rebounds and six assists, boosting her career high total to 113.
Brooks finished with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a team-high three steals. Brittany Harris-Conway (SO, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge HS) had 10 points and four rebounds.
Webster is 12-5 in the SLIAC and 15-9 overall on the season. The Gorloks wind up the regular season on February 25 at Fontbonne University. The SLIAC Tournament starts on February 28 at Spalding University (KY). Webster and Eureka will pair off once again in a first round match up, with both tying for second place in the SLIAC.
