The women's tennis team started the evening with an 8-1 win over Blackburn College (IL), but Webster dropped a heartbreaker in the nightcap, losing its SLIAC opener to host Greenville College (IL), 5-4, on March 29. After overpowering the Beavers, the Gorloks lost two doubles matches, 8-5, and two singles matches in three sets to the Panthers.
Webster opened with three wins at doubles against Blackburn, then took five of six singles, losing the only one in a tie-breaker.
The match against Greenville was a battle across the board. Marissa Lewis (JR, Owasso, OK/Owasso HS) and Kaylen Kress (SO, Bartlett, IL/Bartlett HS) won at #1 doubles, 8-2, Kathleen Kennedy (JR, Tinley Park, IL/Providence Catholic HS) and Isabella Espinoza (JR, Temecula, CA/Temecula HS) at #2, and Chelsea Foster (FR, St. Louis, MO/McCluer North HS) and Erin Roop (SO, LaCrosse, WI/Aquinas HS) at #3, both fell 8-5.
Lewis and Kress had relatively easy wins at #1 and #2 singles, and Foster lost in three sets at #5 after winning the first 6-2. The real war came at the #3 singles where Kennedy had a battle royale with her Panther counterpart. Kennedy won the first set 7-5, lost a tie-breaker set 7-6 in the second, th fell 7-5 in the third set.
The Gorloks are 0-1 in the SLIAC and 1-4 overall. Webster will host Missouri Baptist University on April 4 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center, and Stephens College on April 5.
