Gorloks Battle, But Come Up Empty Against Saints

Box Score The Webster University volleyball team battled as hard as is possible without winning a set, but still fell at Maryville University, 3-0, on September 17.  The Gorloks had leads, rarely fell behind by more than a couple points, but could not come out on top in the final outcome as the Saints won by scores of 25-23, 29-27, and 26-24.

The first set of the match established the tone for the evening.  The teams see-sawed back and forth early, with Webster taking the lead at 16-14, only to have Maryville quickly tie as the score bounced back and forth.  After Webster took a 20-18 lead, Maryville took four straight points to pull ahead, 22-20.  The Gorloks tied it up again at 22-22, before falling 23-25.

In set two, Webster fell behind 1-4, then 5-9, before Webster closed to 8-9.  The Saints reeled off seven straight points to make it 16-8, but a Gorlok 10-2 run knotted the set up at 18-18.  After a Maryville timeout, the Saints took a 21-18 lead only to see the Gorloks tie it up 24-24.  Webster had a set point with a 27-26 lead before losing, 27-29.  Maryville had five set points in the game.

Once again, both teams see-sawed back in the third set, with neither team having more than a two-point advantage till the Gorloks went up, 18-15.  The teams were tied at 22-22, before back to back kills by the Saints put them at match point.  The Gorloks tied it on a pair of Saint attack errors, 24-24, but two more back to back kills by Maryville gave them the set and the match.

Webster had only 14 errors to Maryville's 26, but the Saints had 53 kills to the Gorloks' 41.  Rachel Nelson (Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South) led Webster with 12 kills as she had a .375 hitting percentage on the night. Jordan Vehlewald (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS) had 19 digs to lead Webster, and Allie O'Toole (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) had 20 assists to pace the Gorloks.

Maryville is a former St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member, now an NCAA II member that awards athletic scholarships.  The loss to Maryville breaks a 12-game win streak by the Gorloks over the Saints, dating back to the 2003 season.  Webster is 4-5 overall on the season and opens the 2014 SLIAC campaign as it hosts Iowa Wesleyan University on September 19 at Grant Gymnasium.
