Box Score The Webster University volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2014 season, falling to Southwestern University (TX), 3-2, on September 5, as part of the ASICS Invite at Washington University.  The Gorloks and Pirates traded sets before falling, 15-5, in the tie-breaker finale.

After falling in the first set, 19-25, Webster evened up the match, winning by the same 25-19 score.  The teams were tied at 18-18 before the Gorloks closed out the set with a 7-1 run.  In set three, the teams were tied at 13-13 when the Pirates went on a 12-2 run to win, 25-15.  Seven Webster errors in that stretch contributed to the loss.

The Gorloks sent the match into a tie-breaker set with another 25-19 win in the fourth.  Webster jumped out to an 8-2 lead only to see it evaporate.  Down 17-18, the Gorloks had an 8-1 run to knot the match up at two sets and send it to the tie-breaker set.  In the tie-breaker, Webster fell behind, 5-1, and never challenged as Southwestern won, 15-5, and took the match.

Jenny Howard (SR, Florissant, MO/Duchesne HS) had 15 kills and Sam Kersting (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS) had 13 for the Gorloks.  Webster led in kills for the match, 55-53, but had 34 errors on the afternoon to Southwestern's 24.  The Gorloks had 99 digs to the Pirates 103, and 48 assists to their 53.  Jordan Vehlewald (SR, Wildwood, MO/Lafayette HS), coming off a SLIAC Player of the Week nod, had 39 digs to lead Webster.

The Gorloks are 2-1 on the season and hit the road immediately for a weekend tournament in Terre Haute, IN, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute.  Webster will face the host school and St. Ambrose University (IA) on September 6, and Ohio Wesleyan University and Defiance College (OH) on September 7.
