Box Score The Webster University women's basketball team, headed towards an upset of Westminster College, fell short, 63-58. The Gorloks lost to the Blue Jays, who are second in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 8-2, on January 24 at Grant Gymnasium.
Webster had a five-point halftime lead, and extended the margin to 11 in the opening minutes of the second half, 41-30, as Brittany Harris-Conway (JR, St. James, MO/John F. Hodge) contributed with a pair of layups. Westminster closed within four, 43-39, on a 9-2 run with 13:20 remaining. The Blue Jays took their first lead of the game, 50-49, at the 6:40 mark.
The Gorloks regained the lead momentarily on a pair of Ashley Brooks (JR, Hermann, MO/Hermann HS) free throws but the Blue Jays jumped back on top, 55-54 with two minutes remaining. A layup by Harris-Conway cut the deficit to 59-58, with 14 seconds left but the Blue Jays made their free throws to seal the contest.
Webster took an early 9-3 lead in the game, with Mia Williams (JR, St. Louis, MO/Hazelwood West HS) and Brooks hitting three pointers. The teams traded baskets for the duration of the half; the Gorloks never had a lead larger than seven and entered the locker room ahead, 33-28.
Brooks finished the half with 12 points and three assists, and Williams had eight points on 3-5 shooting. The Gorloks out rebounded the Blue Jays, 23-13, as Webster took advantage of Westminster's big women getting limited action with foul trouble.
Free throws played a big part in the Blue Jays second half comeback as they went 17-25 from the line in the Gorloks hit five of just six. After Brooks' and Williams' three pointers at the start of the contest, Webster went 1-14 from beyond the arc the rest of the way.
Brooks finished with a team-high 16 points before fouling out of the game. Harris-Conway had the double double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Cassie Endicott (SR, Bethalto, IL/Civic Memorial HS) had 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Gorloks fell to 4-6 in the SLIAC and 7-10 overall. Webster has a week off before travelling to Jacksonville, IL, to face MacMurray College on January 31. The Gorloks are home next on February 3 vs. Principia College at Grant Gym.
