Rough Start For Volleyball At Whitewater

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team opened play in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament with a pair of losses, in Whitewater, WI, on October 23.  The Gorloks dropped matches with Wartburg College (IA) and Augustana College (IL), 3-0.

The Gorloks lost in straight sets to Wartburg, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-16.  Webster pulled out in front in the third set, 11-10 and 13-12, before the Knights went on a five point run to take a 17-13 lead.  Wartburg wound up with a 25-16 win, and took the match.  Wartburg, 25-3 on the season now, is a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.  The Knights were receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Top 25 national rankings.

Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/Eureka HS) had eight kills and Torie Grassi (FR, St. Louis, MO/Rosati-Kain HS) had seven for Webster.  Kelsey Hamann (FR, Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) led the Gorloks with 17 assists, and Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) led with 11 digs.

In the nightcap, Webster lost in straight sets to Augustana, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-17.  The Goloks battled throughout, making a run in the third set.  The Gorloks were down 17-7 and inched to within fiive, at 21-16, before the Vikings closed out the set for the win.  Augustana, a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, is 13-13 on the season.

Samantha Budrovich (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) led the Gorloks with eight kills and had a .318 attack percentage against Augustana.  Budrovich also had eight digs for the evening.  O'Toole once again led Webster in digs with 19.  Jilli Zimpfer (FR, St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) had 16 assists in the match to lead the Gorloks.

Webster is 14-12 overall on the season.  The Gorloks play Loras College (IA) and St. Norbert College (WI) to wrap up the Whitewater Tournament on October 24.  Webster returns to play in the SLIAC with a match at Westminster College on October 27.
