Box Score 2 The Webster University volleyball team saw its three match win streak end with a pair of losses in Decatur, IL, on September 18. The Gorloks lost to St. Mary's College (IN), 3-1, and to host Millikin University, 3-0.
Against St. Mary's, Webster lost the first set, 21-25, then tied it up with a 25-23 win in set two. The Gorloks lost the next two sets, 18-25, and the match, 3-1.
With Webster down 2-1 in set four, the teams literally traded points as the score reached 9-9. The Belles ran off four straight points to take a 14-9 lead. A Samantha Budrovich (FR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) kill broke the string and Webster closed to within two at 14-12.
St. Mary's reeled off four more to take an 18-12 lead before Webster closed to within three at 20-17. The Belles won the next two points to extend their advantage to five at 22-17, and wound up winning the set, 25-18, and the match.
Jory Siebenmorgen (JR, Eureka, MO/UMSL) led Webster with 14 kills and had a .400 attack percentage. Rachel Nelson (SR, Papillion, NE/Papillion LaVista-South HS) had nine kills and a .444 percent. Emmi Murphy (FR, Springfield, MO/Central HS) had a team-high 19 assists and Katie O'Toole (JR, St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South HS) led with 10 digs.
The Belles had nine service aces to the Gorloks' two in the match and improved to 6-3 on the season. St. Mary's, located in Notre Dame, IN, is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Webster had rough opener against host Millikin with the Big Blue beating the Gorloks, 25-9, but Webster battled the next two sets. Webster took a 5-3 lead in the second set, but a 9-1 run by Millikin put the Gorloks in a 12-6 hole. The Gorloks rallied to take a 20-19 lead, highlighted by three kills by Emily Knowles (JR, Belleville, IL/Illinois Wesleyan). After a Millikin timeout, the Big Blue regained the lead 21-20. A Nelson kill tied it back up at 21-21, but Millikin prevailed, 25-22.
In the third set, Webster took an 8-4 lead, helped by a pair of kills by Siebenmorgen and Nelson. Millikin took an 11-10 lead before another Siebenmorgen kill tied it at 11-11. The Gorloks fell behind 16-13 before tying it at 16-16. Millikin rattled off four straight to go up 20-16 on its way to a 25-20 final.
Siebenmorgen had seven kills for the match and O'Toole wound up with 13 digs in the loss. Siebenmorgen was named to the Millikin All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Millikin, a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, had a 30-10 record in 2014 while advancing to the NCAA III Tournament. The Big Blue improved to 6-4.
The Gorloks are 4-6 overall on the season. Webster is home on September 22 for a SLIAC match vs. MacMurray College (IL) at Grant Gymnasium. It will be 'Fuzzy's Taco Shop' night, with various promotions for the Gorlok Athletics' sponsor.
