The Webster University men's tennis team improved to 5-1 in non-conference play with a 9-0 win over Berea College (KY), on April 10. The Gorloks easily handled the Mountaineers, sweeping doubles play and singles play.
After winning all three doubles matches, the Gorloks won five of six singles matches in straight sets. Webster's Matt Lang (SR, St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh HS) had the most exciting match of the morning at #5 singles. Lang won the first set, 6-4, before falling, 4-6, in the second. Lang then outlasted his opponent in a marathon tie-breaker, 17-15, to win the match.
Juan Granizo at #1 (JR, Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Alberto Einstein) and freshman Charles McGee (Waterloo, IL/Waterloo HS) at #6, both improved to 9-2 in singles play for the season with their victories. Senior Trent Purnell (Marion, IL/Marion HS) is now 7-4 on the year with his win at #4.
Webster, 7-4 overall, has one more regular season match, hosting Fontbonne University on April 12 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. The Gorloks play in the SLIAC conference tournament on April 22 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center at Forest Park in St. Louis.
