The Gorloks made a two hour trek out to Quincy, Illinois, for their first match of the spring season. They battled hard against the Division II team but lost 9-0.
Â
In doubles, the Gorloks came out hard, implementing new double strategies that they have been working on in practice. They were aggressive at the net and looked to close out points early. Their energy and determination made their opponents hit those extra shots to win the point.
Â
"We played hard ball," said Chelsea Foster (SR. St. Louis, MO) after her doubles match. "We committed to our new doubles strategy. We're going to keep moving forward with that."
Â
The Gorloks didn't let up in singles either. They pushed their opponents on every point to make them earn the win. Jesse Steffens-Willis (JR., St. Louis, MO) had a spectacular first set, forcing a tiebreak. Head Coach Martha Davis-Goldstein was happy with her team's performance.
Â
"We went out confident, and I saw a lot of good things," she said. "This is our first match of the spring, and I'm looking forward to seeing them develop and compete against stiff competition in our future matches."
Â
"I think this was a good warm up since we'll be playing some tough teams coming up," added Monica Behrle (JR., Atlanta, GA) after the match. "In the end, it'll help us become better."
Â
The Gorloks are now 1-2 on the year. Their next match is away against McKendree University on Friday, March 3, at 4:30 p.m.
