Loks Fly By Falcons, Win Third Match in a Row

The Webster University women's tennis team played its third match of its spring break trip in Hilton Head, SC, defeating Concordia University (WI), 6-3, on March 14.  With the victory over the Falcons, the Gorloks move to 3-0 on the trip with their three-match win streak.

The match was pushed back due to wet courts and, when play began, it was with no-ad scoring to make the matches play faster so other teams could get their play in.   But the Loks were not perturbed.

Concordia was Webster's toughest opponent of the trip so far, entering the match with a 10-3 record, and the Loks came out swinging.  Number one doubles won their match, 8-4, and #2 lost in a close, 8-6, match.  Chelsea Foster (SR., St. Louis, MO) and Stephanie Lass (JR., Lake Villa, IL) played a fantastic match at #3. They went back and forth with their opponents, trailing for most of the match before tying the match at 8-8, and forcing a tiebreaker.  They carried on with their momentum to win 7-1 in the tiebreaker, giving the Loks a 2-1 advantage going into singles.

"I think this was the best doubles match [Foster] and I have played," said Lass. "We really came out with a will to win, and I think that gave us the upper hand. I'm really excited to see us carry this energy into the rest of the season together."

In singles, Monica Behrle (JR., Atlanta, GA) scored another point for the Gorloks at #1. Madison Watts (SO., Rogersville, MO) had an exciting match at #3, all three of her sets going to tiebreakers. She won the first tiebreaker, dropped the second, and powered through the third to win her second third-set tiebreaker in consecutive matches.

After losses at #2 and #4, the Loks still needed one more point to win the match. Foster and Lass carried over their momentum from doubles to win at #5 and #6, respectively.  Lass finished first, defeating her opponent, 6-3, 6-3, to give the Gorloks the victory.  Just as Lass was finishing, Foster's match went to a third-set tiebreaker.  Foster dropped the first set, 6-0, but found her footing in the second, winning, 6-3.  She won the tiebreaker, 10-7, and Webster beat Concordia, 6-3.

"We played really consistent today," said Behrle. "Spirit really played a big factor today. They were a good team, but we stayed strong throughout our matches to eventually take the win."

Webster is now 4-4 on the year and play Gordon College on March 15, at 2:30 p.m. EDT.  Go Loks!
