The Webster University women's tennis team played its second SLIAC match in 24 hours, defeating Fontbonne University, 7-2, on April 1 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. Due to scheduling conflicts, only five Gorloks were available, but despite defaulting at #3 doubles and #6 singles Webster prevailed. The Gorloks won the seven lines that were contested.
The Gorloks easily took doubles, only losing one game between the two lines. They adapted well to the changes in pace, and they finished quickly at the net.
In singles, the Gorloks continued their win streak. All five lines stayed strong and won in straight sets. Madison Watts (SO., Rogersville, MO), at #2, had a tough second set, trading games with her opponent before finally taking the set and the match.
"Sometimes we play better than other days," said Watts. "We have to stay mentally tough and power through for the win."
"I felt like everyone played really confidently today," said Assistant Coach Kaylen Kress. "I'm looking forward to seeing more of the things we worked on in practice. I'd like to see us really work on placement and just overall smart tennis in our next match."
With the win, the Gorloks improve to 7-6 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Their next match is against conference opponent Westminster College on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m. at the Webster Groves Tennis Center. Go Loks!
