Celebrating senior night, the Webster University women's tennis team defeated St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Westminster College Blue Jays. It was the Loks' last home match of the season, and Chelsea Foster's (SR. St. Louis, MO) last of her career. Webster came out strong against the Blue Jays, winning 8-1 on April 12 at the Webster Groves Tennis Center.
In doubles, Foster and her partner Stephanie Lass (JR., Lake Villa, IL) came out swinging, jumping to a 7-0 lead at #3. The Blue Jays got a foothold in the match and won the next two games. Foster and Lass settled down and took the next game, winning 8-2.
The other two lines had tougher matches. At #1, Monica Behrle (JR., Atlanta, GA) and Madison Watts (SO., Rogersville, MO) faced hard-hitting opponents, but they stayed strong to win 8-4. At #2 doubles, Sara Rice (SO., Mahomet, IL) and Jesse Steffens-Willis (JR., St. Louis, MO) traded games back and forth with their opponents, neither team able to gain momentum. As the match neared the end, the Loks pulled ahead to win 8-6.
The Gorloks carried their wins over into singles, taking all but one line. At #5, Foster played spectacularly against her opponent. Foster predicted her opponent's shots well and had deep returns, forcing her opponent to make unforced errors. The only loss came at #2 singles. Watts played fantastically, winning the first set in a tiebreaker but had to retire due to injury.
"Tonight, we had a strong performance," commented Head Coach Martha Davis-Goldstein after the match. "Everyone raised their level of play and stayed focused for our most competitive conference match thus far of the season."
"I think tonight was a good match to prepare us for what might be in store for us at the conference tournament," Behrle added. "Focusing on working hard and getting our shots in is key to being successful, and I think that if we stay on this path, we'll continue to get stronger."
With the win, the Gorloks move to 10-7 on the year and 4-0 in conference. Their last regular season match is against their last conference opponent, and rival, Principia College. The match will take place on Thursday, April 13, at 4:30 p.m. in Elsah, IL. The Loks hope to be the #1 seed in the conference with a win at this match. Go Loks!
