KISSIMMEE, Fla. - On its third day of play here Sunday in the Diamond 9 Sunkissed Games, Webster University split a pair of extra innings contests at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
The Gorloks, who are now 4-6 on the season, opened play on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win in eight innings against Arcadia University, before falling 8-7 in 10 innings in the nightcap against Eastern Connecticut State University.
Webster used a one-out infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning from senior first baseman
Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Ft. Zumwalt North) to drive home senior second baseman
Tessa Johanning (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) from third with the winning run against Arcadia, while Eastern Connecticut State scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning after Webster took a 7-6 lead in the top of inning on an RBI single by junior third baseman
Brienna Sheperd (Central Point, Ore./College of the Redwoods) to post the win in the nightcap.
In Sunday's two games, the Gorloks recorded 13 hits, but committed six errors that led to six unearned runs. On the season, Webster has now committed 32 errors, including committing 21 errors in its first six games of its Florida trip. Those 32 errors have led to a total of 34 unearned runs in 68.1 innings of work.
Against Arcadia, Webster jumped out in front 1-0 in the opening inning thanks to two singles, a walk and an RBI single to left by senior first baseman
Katlyn Garza (O'Fallon, Mo./Ft. Zumwalt North).
The Gorloks lead grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the second on a lead off solo homer ovr the fence in left field by Sheperd. The homer was the first of the season for Sheperd and just the fourth of the year for Webster.
Arcadia, though, would rally in the top of the third inning as they took advantage of a Gorlok error and used two hits to plate two runs to tie the game. Both of the runs scored by the Knights were unearned off of sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Johnson (East Alton, Ill./Greenville University).
Neither team would get another scoring opportunity until the bottom of the sixth inning as the Knights recorded two hits, a walk and used a Webster error to load the bases with one out, before senior
Chelsea Thornley (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) replaced Johnson in the circle and proceeded to strike out pinch hitter Julia Gessner and forced Ashley Eckett to pop up to leave the bases loaded.
The teams wouldn't score in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Thornley would retire the Knights in order, before Webster would score its run in the bottom of the frame to post the win. In the inning, Johanning was placed at second due to the international tie breaker rule and after she moved to third on a bunt, Garza stepped to the plate and delivered her game winning hit right past the shortstop, which allowed Johanning to score the winning run.
Garza and Sheperd each had two hits for the Gorloks in the win as they left eight runners stranded for the game. While Webster left eight runners on bases, the Knights stranded seven runners for the game.
Arcadia (1-3) got two of its five hits from Jackie Bilotti.
Thornley (1-3) earned the win in relief of Johnson as she pitched 2.2 innings and allowed no hits and no runs, while walking one and striking out one. Johnson threw 5.1 innings and allowed five hits and two unearned runs, while walking one and striking out one.
Mary Pat Murray (1-1) took the loss in relief of Brooke Ward for the Knights. Murray pitched 2.1 innings and allowed two hits and one run and didn't record either a strikeout or walk a batter.
Meanwhile, in the nightcap, ECSU jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning as they used three and an error by Gorlok sophomore shortstop
Taylor White (St. Charles, Mo./Lutheran St. Charles) to plate two runs, including one unearned run off of senior pitcher
Morgan Mansur (Decatur, Ill./Lincoln Land CC).
The Gorloks would right back in the top of the second inning and tie the game at 2. In the inning, Mansur led off the frame by drawing a walk, moved to third on a double by Sheperd and a walk issued to freshman leftfielder
Skiela Martinez (Whittier, Calif./California) loaded the bases. Junior second baseman
Chelsea Snyder (Mount Vernon, Mo./Fort Scott CC) would bring home the first run as she drew a bases loaded walk from Morgan Sanson, who was ECSU's starting pitcher. The Gorloks added its second run a little later in the inning as Martinez scored on a throwing error by Warriors catcher Megan Hodgdon, which came on a ground ball hit by senior catcher
Terri Dearth (Lemont, Ill./Southwestern Illinois).
ECSU would retake the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a hit batsman and an RBI double by Sara Pisanelli.
Mansur would thwart a Warriors scoring threat in the fourth inning as after they put runners on first and second thanks to singles by Jessica Seymour and Morgan Bolduc, but Mansur would retire the next two Warrior hitters in order to leave two runners on base and the score, 3-2.
In the fifth, ECSU had another scoring chance as the Warriors used two hits and an error to put runners on second and third with two outs, before Mansur forced Seymour to pop out to end the threat.
Down to their final three outs heading into the seventh inning, the Gorloks opened the inning with White reaching on an error. After a bunt by Dearth moved White to second, Johanning reached on a single and on the play, White would score an unearned run on a throwing error by Warriors centerfielder Sabrina LeMere to tie the game and force extra innings.
Webster would strike first in the eighth inning as Mansur would drive home sophomore centerfielder
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad) from third base with her RBI double to left center. Sheperd would follow Mansur with a run scoring single to left center that gave the Gorloks a 5-3 lead.
But, the Warriors would respond in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a two-run pinch hit single by Crysta Wolski off of Mansur to tie the game. Mansur, though, would prevent any further damage as she struck out LeMere, before Callie Duthrie was caught stealing and Alexis Tyrrell grounded out to end in the inning,
The Gorloks scored another run in the ninth inning on a bunt and an RBI single up the middle by Burroughs to take a 6-5 lead, before ECSU used an RBI single by Haleigh Cardello to tie the game at 6, but Mansur would retire the final Warrior hitters of the inning to leave the bases loaded.
Webster would add its seventh run in the top of the 10th inning on an RBI single by Sheperd, who finished with three of WU's seven hits against the Warriors.
ECSU would answer back in the bottom of the 10th as they used two hits, including an game winning RBI double by Tyrrell and an throwing error by Dearth to score two runs and earn the victory.
In addition to Sheperd's three hits, Mansur finished with two hits and scored two runs in the loss.
Mansur (2-3) took the loss in the circle as she allowed 17 hits and eight runs (four earned), while striking out five and walking none.
For the game, the teams left a combined 25 runners on bases as Webster stranded 11 baserunners and ECSU left 14 runners on base in the nearly three hour game.
Morgan Bolduc (1-0), the third Warriors pitcher of the game, tossed 2.2 innings and allowed three hits and two unearned runs, while walking one and fanning two.
Bolduc had three hits and scored two runs for the Warriors, while Tyrrell, Pisanelli, Kamdynn Moroney, Jackie Lewis and Jacky Arndt each added two hits in the win.
Webster will now take Monday off, before concluding its Florida Spring Break trip with back-to-back games on Tuesday, March 13 against Springfield College and Oswego State at 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. EDT respectively at the Fortune Road Softball Complex in Kissimmee.
