SUNSET HILLS, Mo. – Webster University opened up play here Saturday afternoon in its Showdown at Sunset by posting a 5-1-0 match play win over Wisconsin Lutheran at Sunset Hills Country Club.
In match play, the format is a head-to-head style with a golfer from each team squaring off against the same counterpart throughout the 18-hole round, as opposed to traditional stroke play in which an individual's score is the summation of each hole played. Team points are earned by an individual matchup victory.
The Gorloks, who will face Millikin in Sunday's final match beginning at 12:15 p.m., won five of its six head-to-head matches against WLC with WU's only loss being suffered by sophomore
Christian Deters (Teutopolis, Ill./Teutopolis) as he fell 1-up to Damon Gnewikow.
Perhaps the most impressive match win on Saturday came from sophomore
Mitchell Vetter (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) squared the first two holes against Johnny Kositzky, Jr., and then didn't lose another hole and sealed his victory after just 12 holes of play.
In addition to Vetter, sophomore
Will Hocker (Grapevine, Texas/University of Oklahoma) completed his match after 16 holes of play against Trey Gnewikow. Hocker lost one hole against his opponent as they squared a total of 10 holes.
Junior
Cole Pickett (Greenville, Ill./Keiser University) won his match after 16 holes of play against Ben Landvatter. Pickett won the last three holes after the two players had played even over the first four holes of the front nine. Pickett was 1-up after the opening nine holes.
The Gorloks other two match that was finished prior to 18 holes came from junior
Zac Ciesla (Lake Charles, La./Alfred M. Barbe), who won after 17 holes against Grant Hammer and senior
Brian Morris (Shorewood, Wis./Carthage College) won after 17 holes of play against Quinn Schultz.
Webster will conclude the Showdown at Sunset on Sunday against Millikin University. The match will begin at 12:15 p.m. and the players will tee off from the back nine at Sunset Hills Country Club. Millikin opened the event on Saturday with a 5-0-1 win over DePauw.
