This Week in Gorlok Athletics History: January 11-17

WEBSTER GROVES – Without sports for the 2020 first semester, Webster University Athletics looks back at some events that took place during the week for This Week in Gorlok Athletics History – Jan. 11-17.
 
Jan. 11, 2020 – Webster men's basketball extended its homecourt win streak in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play to 16 straight games following the Gorloks 78-65 win over Westminster (Mo.) College at Grant Gymnasium. Along with extending its home SLIAC win streak to 16 straight games, the Gorloks also won its fourth straight game overall to improve to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in the league. In the win over the Blue Jays, Webster shot 52 percent from the field and forced 18 turnovers that led to 17 points to improve to 20-4 in the league play since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Josh Johnson led the Gorloks with 21 points, Enrique Tankins added 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Wynne Brown, Jr. and Jordan Clay each added 13 points in the win. Webster, who led 39-32 at the half, opened the second half on a 13-2 run to push its lead to 18 points at 52-34 with 15:47 left in the game. Westminster, though, responded with a 12-6 run to pull within 58-46 with 12:06 remaining in the game. Johnson and Tankins combined to score 21 of Webster's 39 second half points. Webster held a 40-35 edge on the boards and both teams finished with 15 assists. The Gorloks struggled from the free throw line as they went 4-for-8 (50 percent) at the line, while Westminster was 14-for-16 (88 percent) at the line. Recap | Box Score
 
Jan. 12, 1991 – On this date in 1991, the Webster women's basketball team made history in its game at Principia College. In that game on Jan. 12, 1991, the Gorloks won the program's first-ever women's basketball game as the Gorloks posted a 60-57 win over Principia. Prior to that win at Principia, the Gorloks, who began playing women's basketball in 1986, had opened its program with an 0-63 record (including 14 of those losses by forfeit), before the win at Principia. About a month before the game at Principia, the Gorloks had lost by just three points (59-56) at MacMurray. That three-point loss at MacMurray was the closest the program had come to a win since playing its first-ever game on Dec. 2, 1986 at then Greenville College (now Greenville University. The 1991 team was coached by Randy Kreiwell and assisted by Harold Ott. Among the key players on that 1991 team were forward Michelle Rausch, forward Mickie Kuhlmann, guards Lisa White and Laura Zoellner and at the semester, the Gorloks added two key players, Amy Hartweger and Gwynne Dawdy, who all played a role in the team ending the 1990-91 season with a 4-6 record over its final 10 games and posting a 4-16 overall record and a 3-7 mark in the SLIAC. Jan. 13, 2015 – The Webster Athletics Department announced on this date in 2015 the addition of competitive cheerleading as the newest athletics offering for the Gorloks. The first team tryouts for the Webster cheerleading team were held on April 26, 2015, in Grant Gymnasium. Justin Barton was named the coach of the cheerleading program and since the team began in the 2015-16 school year, the program has performed annually at the Cheer Ltd. Nationals at CANAM in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and during the 2018-19 school year, the program finished third in the Open Coed Collegiate Division. Recap
 
Jan. 14, 2019 – The Webster Athletics Department received the highest level of national recognition for its community service from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) on this date in 2019 as Webster University was named the winner in the "One-Time ActivityProject" category as part of the annual NADIIIAA Community Service Awards. With the win, Webster received a commemorative trophy at the 2019 NCAA Convention in Orlando, Fla., and also received a $750 contribution to Webster's general scholarship fund. Webster earned the honor from the NADIIIAA for its work with the 24th Annual Worldwide Wester Works that was held on Oct. 3, 2018. Recap
 
Jan. 15, 2013 – Webster's women's basketball team picked up a big road won on this date in 2013 as they earned a 69-65 win over Westminster (Mo.) College in Fulton, Mo. The win was Webster's third of the season in league play away from home and gave Westminster its first home loss of the season and just its second home loss in over the past two-plus seasons. Against the Blue Jays, Maggie Zehner paced the way for the Gorloks with 21 points, while Kaliann Rikard added 18 points and game-high 10 rebounds and Courtney Pursley chipped in with 13 points and six boards in the win. In the game, Webster trailed 8-2 early-on, but the Gorloks got back in the game thanks to a 34-18 run to take a 36-26 lead with 1:47 remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays would score the final six points of the half to cut Webster's halftime lead to 36-32. In the second half, Webster pushed its halftime lead to nine points early in the half, before Westminster used a 21-6 run to take a 53-47 lead with 12 minutes left. Five points from Rikard gave Webster a 54-53 lead, but after the teams exchanged the lead several times before the game was tied at 61 with 3:31 left. Rikard would give the Gorloks the lead for good after hitting a trey with 1:31 left in the game. She scored 13 of her 18 points after halftime. In the game, Webster shot 49 percent from the field and 53 percent (9-for-17) from the 3-point line. The Blue Jays were just 5-for-21 from the 3-point line in the loss. Recap | Box Score
 
Jan. 16, 2011 – The Webster men's and women's track team competed in just the program's second-ever indoor track meet on this date in 2011 at the Principia Indoor Relays in Elsah, Ill. At the meet, 11 athletes competed for the Gorloks in seven different running events. For the women, Jane McKibben finished second in the 3,000-meter run, while the women's 4-x-800 meter relay team turned in a first place finish and Eroica Stackhouse placed third in the 1,600-meter run. Meanwhile, on the men's side, Aaron Oberneufemann finished second in the 500-meter run, while Daniel Henkey placed third in the 1,600-meter run and the men's distance medley relay team came in fifth place. Jan. 17, 2019 – On this date in 2019, Webster University Athletics announced the hiring of Katie Grififth as the school's interim softball coach for the 2019 season. She became the fifth head coach in the 22-year history of the program. Griffith, who was a three-year letterwinner as a pitcher at the University of Georgia from 2004-06, came to Webster after working for the National Pitching Association, which is run by legendary pitching instructor Tom House. Along with working with the National Pitching Association, Griffith worked during the 2018 season as a Group Sales Executive with the Gateway Grizzlies. In addition to working with the Grizzlies, Griffith moved to the St. Louis area in 2017 to continue training as a baseball pitcher with the Grizzlies and while she trained with the Grizzlies, she worked in the team's front office doing stadium operations, as well as, marketing and promotions. Since becoming Webster's coach, Griffith has led the Gorloks softball program to a 16-32 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the SLIAC. Recap
