WEBSTER GROVES – For the first time since 2018 and the 14th in school history, Webster University will return to the postseason on Wednesday, May 5 as the No. 2 seeded Gorloks play host to No. 7 seeded Eureka College in the quarterfinals of the 2021 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at 4:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Academy in Frontenac.
The Gorloks, who won five of its last seven regular season games, enter the SLIAC Tournament sporting a 16-10 overall and finished regular season league play with a 6-4 record to earn the No. 2 seed in this year's SLIAC Tournament, which is the program's highest seed in the tournament since 2012, when the Gorloks finished as the tournament runner-up following a 6-5 loss to top-seeded Fontbonne in the championship game.
This year's tournament features a different format as all eight teams have qualified for the event and after Wednesday's quarterfinal round, which will be played at the higher seed home fields, the tournament will move to Westminster (Mo.) College in Fulton, Mo., for the final three days of the tournament. All games played at Westminster will feature a double elimination format.
This will mark the first time since 1999 that the SLIAC Softball Tournament will feature all eight teams, but the first time that the entire tournament will not be a complete double elimination format as the teams that lose in the quarterfinals on Wednesday will see their seasons completed.
Along with Webster's quarterfinal game at St. Joseph's Academy with Eureka, the other quarterfinal match-ups feature top-seeded and regular season SLIAC Champion Fontbonne (17-16, 10-4 SLIAC) hosting No. 8 seeded Blackburn College (4-16 overall, 3-9 SLIAC) at 4:30 p.m. at ABC Park in St. Ann, Mo., while No. 3 seeded Spalding (12-11 overall, 6-5 SLIAC) hosts No. 6 seeded Greenville (9-14 overall, 3-3 SLIAC) in Louisville, Ky., at 3:30 p.m. CT and the final quarterfinal match-up features No. 4 seeded Westminster (15-17 overall, 6-6 SLIAC) hosting No. 5 seeded Iowa Wesleyan (6-12 overall, 4-4 SLIAC).
The four quarterfinal winners will advance to Thursday's semifinal double-elimination round in Fulton, Mo., at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The championship game of this year's SLIAC Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at 12 p.m., with a second if necessary game to follow at 2:30 p.m.
