BELLEVILLE, Ill. – Webster University placed a league-best 79 student-athletes on the 2020-21 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team that was released by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.
The 79 student-athletes selected were the most among the league's schools as Greenville University was next with 73 overall selections and Fontbonne was third with 52 overall selections. Spalding was fourth with 42 and they were followed by Westminster in fifth with 41 selections, Iowa Wesleyan was sixth with 39 selections and Principia was seventh with 23 selections. Blackburn College and Eureka were eighth and ninth on the list with 18 and 15 overall selections respectively.
Unlike previous seasons when the SLIAC would release an All-Academic Team three times during the fall, winter and spring sports seasons, this year, the league lumped all three sports seasons into one due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The Webster men's soccer team led the way with 13 overall players selected, while the women's soccer team had 12 selections and baseball had 11 players honored. The softball team has nine selections, while the volleyball and women's tennis teams each had seven selections and the women's cross country/track team had six selections. The women's basketball team had five players honored, while the men's golf team had four players recognized. The men's tennis team had three and men's cross country and track team had two selections, while the men's basketball and men's track team had one overall selection.
This year's 2020-21 SLIAC All-Academic Teams had a total of 400 student-athletes receive All-Academic honors from around the conference. In order to earn All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must hold a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and have been enrolled in at least one full year at their current institution.
Among the 78 student-athletes honored this year are three student-athletes that have earned SLIAC All-Academic Team honors for four consecutive years – fifth-year senior softball player
Abby Burroughs (Edwardsville, Ill./Triad), fifth-year senior baseball player
Kyler Kent (Pottsboro, Texas/Pottsboro) and fifth-year senior baseball player
Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic).
Along with having 78 student-athletes named to the SLIAC All-Academic Teams for the 2020-21 school year, Webster had two student-athletes earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2020-21 as men's soccer players
Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and
Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) were honored. The spring sports, plus volleyball have yet to announce their Academic All-District teams for this year.
