Five Gorloks Named to SLIAC 1990's All-Decade Volleyball Team

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University volleyball team had five players named to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) 1990's All-Decade Team that was announced on Friday by the league office.
 
Webster's five selections to the to the 19-member All-Decade Volleyball team were tied for the most in the league with Principia, who had four players selected and the Coach of the Decade, Lee Suarez. In addition to Webster and Principia's five selections each, Westminster (Mo.) College had four selections and Maryville University had three selections. Blackburn College and Fontbonne University each had one selection each.
 
To be named to the All-Decade Team, the selections were made using a system that awarded points based on All-Conference selections. In addition, any player receiving the top individual award during a season (Player of the Year or Defensive Player of the Year) earned a selection. Additionally, coaches were picked based on Coach of the Year accolades won during the decade.
 
During the 1990's, Webster won three regular season SLIAC titles (1994, 1995 and 1997) and four SLIAC Tournament titles (1993, 1994, 1995 and 1997). In addition, the Gorloks also had four regular season runner-up finishes as they were the runners-up in 1990, 1992, 1993 and tied for second in 1996. The Gorloks posted a 176-126 overall record in the decade and went 84-28 in SLIAC play, including winning 34 consecutive league matches from 1993-1996, including going a combined 26-0 in SLIAC play in 1994 and 1995. Webster also won 20 or more matches in four of those 10 seasons, including a then school record 24 wins in 1997 as Webster went 24-7. The SLIAC Tournament title in 1993 was the first SLIAC title in any sport in the school's history.
 
Along with their success on the court, those successes parlayed into recognition for Webster's players as the five Gorlok players on the SLIAC 1990's Volleyball All-Decade Team earned a combined 17 All-SLIAC honors, including a combined 12 First-Team All-SLIAC accolades and two players, Kate Evans and Melissa Zwilling were four-time All-SLIAC selections. In addition, two of the All-Decade players earned SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors and one of the All-Decade players, Jerelyn Guelker, was named the SLIAC Player of the Year twice as she shared the honor in 1996 with Westminster's Brenna Seboldt and won the honor outright in 1997. Three of the All-Decade players have been inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame – Molly Farrell, Guelker and Zwilling and one has been enshrined in the SLIAC Hall of Fame – Guelker.
 
Here are Webster's five SLIAC 1990's All-Decade Volleyball Team selections.

Kate Evans (1994-97) | OH | St. Louis, Mo. (Lindbergh)
In her four years as a Gorlok from 1994-97, Evans was a four-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning First-Team All-SLIAC honors in 1997. Evans is the only Gorlok player in school history to record 1,000 career kills, 1,000 career digs and 300 career blocks. As a Gorlok, Evans sits fourth in career kills with 1,122, seventh in career digs (1,536) and seventh in career blocks (308). In addition, she also sit fifth in career attack attempts (3,010), fifth in career points (1448.0), sixth in career block assists (200), seventh in career sets played (421) and 11th in career digs per set (3.65). She recorded 200 or more kills in all four seasons, including a high of 321 kills in 1996 and she had 445 or more digs in three of her four seasons, including 502 digs in 1997, which is now 10th on the school's single season chart. In 1995, she had 186 blocks, which is seventh most in a season in school history and also had 77 solo blocks that season, which are 10th on the single season chart. Evans also recorded 93 career assists, 118 career service aces and had 600 or more assists attempts in each season, including a high of 896 in 1996.
 
Molly (Farrell) Orlando (1993-95) | OH | St. Charles, Mo. (Duchesne)
In her three seasons as a Gorlok from 1993-95, Farrell was a three-time All-SLIAC selection and earned first team All-SLIAC honors those three seasons. Along with being a three-time All-SLIAC selection, Farrell was named the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year in 1993 and was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. As a Gorlok, she holds the school record for career attack percentage (.341) and also holds the school record for career blocks per set (3.07) and career points per set (6.19) and is second in career solo blocks (319), career block assists (405) and career blocks (724). Additionally, she is third in career kills per set (3.69), fourth in career points (1460.5) and ninth in career kills (872). She is one of two players to record over 600 career blocks as she had over 200 blocks in all three seasons, including 272 blocks in 1995, which is second on the school's single season chart. Her .410 attack percentage is tops on the school's single season chart, while her 4.85 kills per set in 1993 and her 7.72 points per set are also first on the school's single season chart. Farrell also recorded 120 assists, 67 service aces and 494 digs in her collegiate career and totaled 1,941 career attack attempts.
 
Jerelyn (Guelker) Valin (1994-97) | MH | St. Louis, Mo. (Lutheran South)
Guelker was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Webster from 1994-97 and in those four seasons, she was a three-time All-SLIAC selection and earned first team honors all three of those seasons. In addition to being a three-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection, she was a two-time SLIAC Player of the Year as she shared the honor in 1996 with Westminster's Brenna Seboldt and took home the honor herself in 1997. Additionally, she was inducted into the inaugural Webster Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2010 and was enshrined into the SLIAC Hall of Fame in 2007. She is one of two players in school history to record 1,000 career kills and 300 career blocks as she sits third in career kills with 1,184 and holds the school record for career blocks with 830. Guelker recorded over 200 kills in three of her four seasons, including 454 kills in 1997, which is fourth on the school's single season chart. Her 449 blocks in 1995 are a single season school record and she had over 100 blocks in the other three seasons. Along with being the school's all-time leader in blocks (830) and third in career kills (1,184), Guelker is also second in career blocks per set (2.19), second in career points (1,901.5), second in career points per set (5.02), third in career attack percentage (.325), seventh in career attack attempts (2,627) and is 16th in career digs (964). She also recorded 139 assists and 99 aces in her career and played in 379 career sets.
 
Colleen Simpson (1990-93) | OH | Florissant, Mo. (McCluer North)
Simpson was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Webster from 1990-93 and in her time as a Gorlok, she was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including earning First-Team All-SLIAC accolades in 1992 and 1993. In her career, she stands fourth in career blocks (368), fifth in career service aces (146), fifth in career solo blocks (171), seventh in career block assists (197), ninth in career points (1,158.5), 10th in career blocks per set (1.01), 11th in career attack attempts (2,522) and 13th in kills (743). She recorded 150 kills in all four seasons, including a high of 246 kills in 1990 and had 50 or more blocks in all four seasons, including 179 blocks in 1993, which is eighth on the single season chart. Simpson played in a single season school record 38 matches in 1990 and her 2.45 blocks per set are fifth on the school's single season chart. Additionally, Simpson also recorded 35 assists, 777 digs and hit .188 in her collegiate career.
 
Melissa Zwilling (1999-02) | OH | St. Louis, Mo. (Bishop DuBourg)
Zwilling, who played just one season in decade, was as four year letterwinner for the Gorloks from 1999-02. In 1999, she was named the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year and earned First-Team All-SLIAC honors after recording 482 kills, 297 digs and hit .260 in 107 sets. The 482 kills are second most in a single season in school history, while her 1,182 attack attempts are also second best in single season school history. Along with being the SLIAC Newcomer of the Year and a First-Team All-SLIAC selection in 1999, Zwilling was a four-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection in her career and was inducted into the Webster Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Bishop DuBourg Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Zwilling is one of four Gorloks in the program's history to be a member of the 1,000 Career Kill Club and the 1,000 Career Dig Club. She currently sits second on the school's all-time charts in kills (1,463), kills per set (3.78), attack attempts (4,005) and is third in career points (1,574.50, fifth in career points per set (4.07), career digs per set (3.72), 10th in career digs (1,439), 17th in career sets played (387) and 20th in career attack percentage (.229). Her 78 attack attempts at Fontbonne in 2002 are tied for first on the school's single match chart, while her 39 digs against Fontbonne in 2002 are tied for 11th on the school single match chart. She also had 42 assists, 54 service aces and 72 blocks in her collegiate career.
